Commercial Painting

Picking The Right Color For Your Commercial Property

It’s no secret that businesses have been using color in their marketing and advertising to appeal to certain emotions to potential and existing consumers for years. Color is a marketing tool that can affect the human psyche in a variety of ways. For example, the color green is often used to invoke a sense of naturalness, health, and environmental friendliness. Red is known to invoke a sense of hunger. Blue is often associated with productivity, business, and professionalism.

Whether you are aware of it or not, each color of the rainbow has a certain emotional sense that it evokes, and businesses use these colors to their advantage. What does this mean for you in your commercial environment? It means that by using color, you may be able to change the morale, energy level, and feelings experienced by not only the customers and associates you bring into the office or store, but also the employees as well.

At MBC, we’re well aware of the way colors can affect people, and our commercial painting crew can help you to understand and pick what colors are right for your business. When considering what color to paint your building’s exterior or interior, there are certain things you’ll want to consider, such as:

  • What is the natural lighting and how will it affect the look of this paint?
  • What type of artificial lighting will be used and how will it affect the look of your paint?
  • What type and color of furniture will be used?
  • What type and color of carpeting do you plan to use?
  • How does the design of your building affect what paint you will use?

These are all good questions to ask yourself before picking the right color for your property, and if you’re unsure of the answers, MBC Services can help.

To familiarize yourself with these concepts, next time you are in a restaurant, mall, shopping center, salon, or other commercial space, check out and be mindful of their use of color, where they use it, and how it makes you feel. Using the proper colors can have a big effect on whether you buy something or turn around and run – so it’s important to know and understand these color concepts.

If you need help deciding what color is best for your commercial building, contact MBC Services today and we’ll get you started on the right foot!

Wood Rot and Termites

Termites and Wood Rot

If you have suffered wood rot in your home or property, one of the main causes could be termites.  While we can take care of wood rot replacement at MBC Services, it is important to know and understand information about termites to prevent this from happening again. No matter how old or new your house is, no matter what size, no matter what style, there is going to be wood in your home. And where there is wood, there is the danger of getting a termite infestation.

What are termites?

Termites are colony pests who feed on cellulose. Cellulose appears in any plant or wood material. These pests are a danger because as they eat the interior of wooden materials, they hollow it out, weakening the structure.

5 Signs you may have termites:

  1. Finding discarded wings on the floor, near walls, or in windows sills.
  2. Termites also leave tiny brown pellets of excrement, so if you start to see these, that is a strong sign.
  3. If you find mud tubes inside or outside, this is another sign of termites.
  4. Termites eat the cellulose inside wood, so as they get nearer to the surface of wooden structures, the paint on wood bubbles or cracks.
  5. If your wood sounds hollow when you tap on it, you probably have termites.

What can I do?

There are many ways to get rid of termites. The best solution is to call professionals to exterminate them for you. Typically, it will $30-$50 per month for the professional to identify the size of the colony, spray outside your house, use baits, and spray inside wall voids. But, you can always kill them and prevent another infestation yourself.

When you are working on your termite problem, be sure to remove any easy food sources, such as firewood, lumber, or paper. Pull out stumps and other paint-based debris and place screens on every entry point into your house. Creating a sandy soil barrier also works to slow termites down. Chemical-filled liquid pesticides, wood treatments, baits, and stake treatments are also available.

If you have experienced wood rot as a result of a termite infestation, you’ll want to call a professional team to get the wood replaced – as old, rotten wood can be dangerous to the structure of your house – as well as be detrimental to the visual aesthetics. Dealing With Wood Rot – How To Fix It And What To Expect

Having rotten wood in the structures of your home can inevitably lead to severe damage and completely destroy your house’s foundation, causing the need for foundational repair. And unfortunately, there’s only so much you can do to prevent it. Wood rot can occur for any reason- heat, moisture, fungi, and even your pets can contribute to an untimely disaster.

On top of that, wood rot is extremely difficult to discover and it can go unnoticed for a very long time. When damage happens to our homes it’s usually very easy to spot what’s wrong, such as water damage or a fire that turned the inside of your home into a mess. Unless you go looking for wood rot, you won’t find it. If you suspect wood rot, fortunately, our professional team can come check for it. And if you do have wood rot, we can easily handle this stressful time for you and get you back in your home safe and comfortable.

What causes wood rot?

Like previously mentioned, your home can fall victim to wood rot for many reasons- all it needs is some time and contributing factors such as moisture. When moisture is retained in the wood, fungi grows and can spread at an alarming rate. And unfortunately, almost everywhere in your home is susceptible to this process because water can collect in so many places- window sills, underneath sinks, outside of any door, by the showers, on your roof, etc. When this moisture builds up over time, the chances for wood rot increases.

You found out you have wood rot, how is it fixed?

The process of repairing and replacing rotten wood can be a relatively cheap process, so you don’t have to worry too much about breaking your savings account to life safely. Most wood rot repairs cost less that $1000, but prices usually range between $100-$2500. The first step is to have our team do a walk-through of your home and find the damaged wood. This search will be very thorough and every area that is destroyed from rot will be discovered in order to prevent further spreading.

The process can be lengthy if the wood rot is very prominent, but our experts dedicate their time to repairing or completely replacing the wood that has been eaten away by mold and the process will prevent your home from potentially being damaged beyond repair.

How can wood rot be prevented now that you have a brand new and mold-free structure?

Wood rot is a phenomenon that happens naturally over time, and even more so in places that are very humid and wet. Wood is the main backbone of almost every house, so it can be tricky to make sure it stays away. However, there are a few ways to prevent it no matter what climate you live in and how old your house is.

There is no way for you to remove fungus spores, but you can prevent them from happening by:

  • Draining and drying wet areas: Mold thrives with moisture, and all it takes to lower the chances of wood rot developing is by keeping places dry that accumulate water regularly.
  • Treating the wood: Products applied to wood such as paint, sealers, stains, and caulking can prevent wood from developing fungi. This is something that may have been overlooked when your house was being built.
  • Increase the airflow: The best way to remove moisture that develops both quickly or over time is to keep the air in your home moving.

5 Reasons to Build the Deck of your Dreams

There are many reasons as to why adding a new and beautiful deck to your home will make your life so much better. As seasons change and it starts getting warmer- it begins to feel more like backyard barbecues and less like hot cocoa on your couch. We can help you build that dream deck, or simply update and remodel the one you already have. Whatever you decide to move forward with, you should know the amazing benefits of getting this project started.

1. It Can Become An Extension Of Your Living Space

What’s better than adding basically a whole new room in your house, but with the freedom of being outside? A functional deck is essential for every month in the year, but they are almost needed in spring and summer.

What’s great about having a deck installed is you can be as simple or fancy as you want- it’s all up to you. Do you want a luxurious retreat with a bar, couches, patio furniture, a canopy, and all your outdoor accessories? Or would you prefer a simple wooden space to host parties and get that grill going? Regardless of what you decide, we can do it all. It’s never too late to take your home to the next level and create this extension.

2. Your Current Deck Doesn’t Function Well And Is Unsafe

Are those floorboards creaking and has normal wear and tear got you on edge? Decks that are older (perhaps it’s been there since you moved in) require a lot of upkeep and maintenance. If you have people running inside and outside constantly, your deck can become hazardous and it might be time for an update.

Most new deck products are amazingly maintenance free. Getting your deck remodeled for safety purposes is a huge benefit for you and your family.

3. Better Curb Appeal And Adding Value To Your House

You may be surprised how a new and functional deck will raise the value of your home and increase curb appeal to future buyers, if you decide to move.

A plain backyard with an old deck that has a lot wear and tear can have a pretty big impact on what your home will be appraised for in the future.

4. It Can Turn A Small Backyard Into A Great Retreat

Most people with small backyard spaces think they are limited to grass and maybe a small porch. However, that is rarely the case. In fact, adding a deck to a small backyard space can amplify and make the most out of your area- and you can get as simple or high-end as you’d like. And like previously mentioned, adding a deck to a small house can seriously boost curb appeal and value.

5. They Are The Best For Hosting Parties

It doesn’t matter if you know two people or 50, having people over during some of the spring and summer holidays or hosting events is so much more enjoyable when you can relax outside around a fire pit and enjoy the fresh air.

Bonus: you don’t have to deal with people making a mess inside your home.

If you are on the fence about getting your deck remodeled, feel free to contact us- we know it can be difficult to choose the right company and get affordable prices. We are here to help your deck dreams come true!

7 Tips for Hiring a Great Remodeling Company

Whether you are a needing remodel for a commercial building, a homeowner with big ideas, or just someone who needs some work done on their house, it can be a brain pain trying to find a company you trust with your project. Many don’t even know where to start when it comes to hiring a team to make the changes you need done. Before jumping into something you might regret, it’s important to figure out what you need to do in advance, which will make the process run a lot smoother for everyone. Below are some key tips to keep in mind when hiring a remodeling company.

1.) Communication is key

Before price and labor is even discussed, the most important thing is having someone who understands what you need. Many contractors will jump on anything you want to make quick money, whether they understand what you want or not. For example, if you want new kitchen counter tops, explain exactly what you want to the contractor and have them show you the options that you can select from. Judge their customer service and how they react to you being specific in your needs.

2.) Where’s the proof?

One of the biggest mistakes that people make when choosing a company to work on their home is being fooled into believing the company is that ‘excellent.’ As with any company, there will be good and bad reviews. However, if a company has 2 out of 5 stars; think logically. Out of all the contractors you are considering, skim their websites for reviews, before and after pictures, and their ratings compared to others.

3.) Understand credentials

How do you know the real credentials of a business? Look at their name.  Companies with abbreviations at the end of their name mean that they have certifications, licenses, or are associated with a bigger business. For example, CGR stands for Certified Graduate Remodeler, and NAHB stands for National Association of Home Builders. These credentials boost a company.

4.) You get what you pay for

A seemingly great company has labor for sale…all of the time. Red flag. Whether it’s a small start up company or a large manufacturer, a company that always has sales going isn’t a good thing. It doesn’t mean they have that much money to spare, it means they are desperate. While this isn’t true for every company, many can be misleading with the constant sales. Many people mistake flash sales for good deals- when in reality it’s a company looking for more exposure because they are rarely chosen.

5.) Get it in writing

You need a contract. If the company you hire gives you a contract without a reliable schedule, then they might be overbooked and not primarily focused on your needs. A contract should have a strong timeline of how long the project will take every day from start to finish. A contract should have not only a blueprint, but it should also have a detailed schedule from start to finish. This should be kept in an organized place along with your receipts, payments, etc.

6.) Be prepared for everything

While this sounds like a very broad statement, it is very realistic. No matter what type of renovation you are doing, have a plan. Like previously stated, you need to make firm choices. Whether it is the color of paint or a type of floor, you need to know what you want and make sure you’ve made the right decision. If you go into everything knowing exactly what you want and need, it’ll make everything easier for everyone. Look over the samples they gave you and talk to them about it. Make sure you have enough space for the crew. Remove anything of value that could accidentally be ruined during the process.

7.) Know your gut feelings and build trust

Whether you believe it or not, a contractor is going to be a part of your home anywhere from a few days to multiple weeks. This is probably the most important step. No matter how good a contractor’s credentials are, if you feel off about something and uncomfortable with them in your home, choose someone else. Your contractor should understand exactly what you need done in every way, and you should be able to trust them around your family. Take care of them- make sure they have a lot of space to work and they are insured.

You trust your contractor with a lot, especially if the project is big. However, you are also welcoming them into your home. If you cross your T’s and dot your I’s, your home improvement will be painless.

Bathroom Remodel

Frequently Asked Questions for a Bathroom Remodel

One of the most popular requests we get at MBC are those of bathroom remodels. And, understandably so, as the bathroom of any house or office is one of the most frequented parts of the property.

Time and time again we get people asking us questions like, “How should I remodel my bathroom?” or, “What is involved when remodeling a bathroom?”  All great questions, but there are many more things to consider when undergoing a bathroom overhaul.

In this post, we will do our best to offer some insights into the most frequently asked bathroom remodel questions. Whether you are getting a bathroom remodel in Dallas, or anywhere else for that matter, use these FAQ’s as a guide and contact us to learn more about how we can help.

Q. How long does a bathroom remodel take?
A. Like many things in life, it depends on a variety of things, like the details of your design, the availability of the fixtures you’re looking for, and the materials you are wanting to use. Most bathroom remodels include taking out the bathtub, sink, toilet, and rearranging the room. The more extensive the changes to the bathroom, the longer it will take.

Q. How should I rearrange my bathroom floor plan?
A. How you rearrange your bathroom is entirely up to you. However, we can offer some guidance on how the process works. Before a bathroom is remodeled, you will want to make sure to work out all of the minute details of the layout and design. When thinking about and planning the new design, be sure to arrange it in a way that allows you to show off your beautiful new shower, unique faucets, plush countertops, and other new bathroom elements you may be designing for. Also, it is important to keep in mind plumbing placement during your planning phase.

Q. Should I use a wooden floor in my bathroom remodel?
A. Yes, you can use wooden floors in a bathroom remodel as long as there isn’t an excessive amount of moisture in the bathroom on a daily basis. You will have to use your best judgement on this, and there will always be a chance that you could still have water issues with your wooden flooring, but it would be similar to having a wooden floor near the dishwasher, water heater, and laundry equipment. If there is too much water on the wooden floor, too often, it could damage the floor, so be mindful of this.

Q. Should I replace my entire bathtub or just refurnish it?
A. It depends on your unique situation on whether or not you will want to refurnish or replace your bathtub. Refurnishing may be a good option if your bathtub does not have rush and only minor scuffs or cracks. The scuffs and cracks can be repaired and refurnishing the tub can successfully ad years to your tub or shower without the expense of replacement. However, in more sever cases, such as rusty, cracked tubs, a removal and replacement will be needed.

When considering a bathroom remodel, think about these questions carefully and consider if it is the right option for you. Read our full list of Bathroom Remodel Q and A’s here. Call MBC Services today for a free consultation on how we can help with your bathroom remodel.

How to Choose the Right Construction Company

Choosing the right construction company to work with is a crucial element of the process of developing a new space. Whether it be for residential remodeling, apartments or other multi-family remodeling, or commercial remodeling, the decision of choosing the right construction company is crucial. Even more so in the exploding city of Dallas, where construction and remodeling are booming and show no signs of slowing down.

At MBC, we know that it this can be an overwhelming process, so we created a few tips you can follow when looking at construction companies that will make your decision simpler.

1. Research Your Project First
You don’t have to be a construction expert, or know everything about the project you want to build, to hire a construction company. But you should do some research on the project first. A simple Google search about your construction project will give you all kinds of search results, including what to expect, the process you might go through, images relating to your project, and other general information. By familiarizing yourself with this type of information, you will give yourself a general idea of what to expect for the type of project you are about to undergo. This will, in turn, help you with interviewing construction contractors and learning about how they will approach your project.

2. Check Company Reviews
These days, more and more people are relying on online reviews to make purchase decisions. It is a phenomena that is happening from everything to fast food restaurants, to movies, to clothing – and the remodeling and construction industries are no different. When researching construction companies in Dallas, look at their reviews from others who have used them. Check out their Google ratings, Facebook ratings, Yelp ratings, and others on the web. This can give you a good indication on how well the company has performed for others.

3. Check Their Social Presence
Falling in line with company reviews, check to see if the construction company has a social media presence. Why? Because it will tell you which companies are involved in the community and have a good social presence. Companies who take the time to get involved and stay engaged are the ones who are planning to be around for the long haul, and care about giving a good impression. This translates into their work for you. So, before you hire, see if they have a Facebook profile, Twitter profile, Instagram profile, and a good Google presence. If so, they are probably an involved and reputable company.

4. Ask for References
When interviewing construction companies, don’t be afraid to ask for references from past jobs. The best companies should be more than happy to provide you with references and case studies from past projects. They understand that this is important, and should have some on-hand to provide.

At MBC, we know that looking for a construction company in Dallas can be a daunting task, but we hope these tips can help make your decision process easier. Give us a call to learn more about our company and how we can help with any type of construction or remodeling project.
