Whether you are a needing remodel for a commercial building, a homeowner with big ideas, or just someone who needs some work done on their house, it can be a brain pain trying to find a company you trust with your project. Many don’t even know where to start when it comes to hiring a team to make the changes you need done. Before jumping into something you might regret, it’s important to figure out what you need to do in advance, which will make the process run a lot smoother for everyone. Below are some key tips to keep in mind when hiring a remodeling company.
1.) Communication is key
Before price and labor is even discussed, the most important thing is having someone who understands what you need. Many contractors will jump on anything you want to make quick money, whether they understand what you want or not. For example, if you want new kitchen counter tops, explain exactly what you want to the contractor and have them show you the options that you can select from. Judge their customer service and how they react to you being specific in your needs.
2.) Where’s the proof?
One of the biggest mistakes that people make when choosing a company to work on their home is being fooled into believing the company is that ‘excellent.’ As with any company, there will be good and bad reviews. However, if a company has 2 out of 5 stars; think logically. Out of all the contractors you are considering, skim their websites for reviews, before and after pictures, and their ratings compared to others.
3.) Understand credentials
How do you know the real credentials of a business? Look at their name. Companies with abbreviations at the end of their name mean that they have certifications, licenses, or are associated with a bigger business. For example, CGR stands for Certified Graduate Remodeler, and NAHB stands for National Association of Home Builders. These credentials boost a company.
4.) You get what you pay for
A seemingly great company has labor for sale…all of the time. Red flag. Whether it’s a small start up company or a large manufacturer, a company that always has sales going isn’t a good thing. It doesn’t mean they have that much money to spare, it means they are desperate. While this isn’t true for every company, many can be misleading with the constant sales. Many people mistake flash sales for good deals- when in reality it’s a company looking for more exposure because they are rarely chosen.
5.) Get it in writing
You need a contract. If the company you hire gives you a contract without a reliable schedule, then they might be overbooked and not primarily focused on your needs. A contract should have a strong timeline of how long the project will take every day from start to finish. A contract should have not only a blueprint, but it should also have a detailed schedule from start to finish. This should be kept in an organized place along with your receipts, payments, etc.
6.) Be prepared for everything
While this sounds like a very broad statement, it is very realistic. No matter what type of renovation you are doing, have a plan. Like previously stated, you need to make firm choices. Whether it is the color of paint or a type of floor, you need to know what you want and make sure you’ve made the right decision. If you go into everything knowing exactly what you want and need, it’ll make everything easier for everyone. Look over the samples they gave you and talk to them about it. Make sure you have enough space for the crew. Remove anything of value that could accidentally be ruined during the process.
7.) Know your gut feelings and build trust
Whether you believe it or not, a contractor is going to be a part of your home anywhere from a few days to multiple weeks. This is probably the most important step. No matter how good a contractor’s credentials are, if you feel off about something and uncomfortable with them in your home, choose someone else. Your contractor should understand exactly what you need done in every way, and you should be able to trust them around your family. Take care of them- make sure they have a lot of space to work and they are insured.
You trust your contractor with a lot, especially if the project is big. However, you are also welcoming them into your home. If you cross your T’s and dot your I’s, your home improvement will be painless.
